Piers Morgan Fawns Over Obama
By · CommentsNow we know the Piers Morgan really intends to carry the Larry King tradition forward.

British tabloid veteran Piers
Morgan — says one of the people he’d like to talk with is President
Obama. In an exclusive morning TV interview, Morgan wouldn’t tell “Early Show” special contributor Amanda Holden
who his first guest will be, but he did share a short list of people
he’d like to get in front of the cameras — and Mr. Obama’s on the list.“I’d love to (interview) President Obama,” said Morgan. “I like what
he’s done for the reputation of America abroad, which I’m not sure many
Americans fully understand. But he has restored the reputation of
America, in my view, hugely.”

After being in office for 28 years, Barbara Boxer’s
world is likely going to get rocked, despite a Hollywood producer
railing against her opponent, Carly Fiorina.
Prognosticators are predicting that California’s current senator may be
unseated in the upcoming November elections by the former
Hewlett-Packard CEO Fiorina.
While folks are focused on the No. 1 issue, that being the economy, the
nearly bankrupt Golden State stands as a poster child for the ugly
consequences of unchecked Democratic spending.
The Boxer campaign is attempting to take a bite out of Fiorina’s
popularity by claiming that she laid off workers during her tenure at
HP. Instead the attacks are serving to underscore the fact that Fiorina
has not been a professional politician and has genuine experience in the
business world.
Another approach, which incidentally has been given an assist by
Hollywood producer Robert Greenwald, has been to characterize Fiorina’s
social views as out of the mainstream.
The GOP candidate is pro-life, pro-traditional marriage and pro-Second Amendment.
Interestingly, the attacks aren’t working. That’s because voters mainly
want to hear about the specific plans candidates have to fix the ailing
economy.

Reality Culture and the President
By · Comments
Reality television now dominates primetime programming on the broadcast networks and is increasingly taking over cable as well.
The high ratings and low cost of these shows insures that this type of entertainment, and I use the term loosely, is here to stay.
The reality show genre has not remained static. New boundary-pushing shows have emerged as networks try to outdo each other.
In an unsettling sign of the times, it seems that we have rapidly mushroomed into a reality show culture, with all of the attendant celebrities such as Kate Gosselin, Kim Kardashian and the cast of “Jersey Shore,” who for no justification are outrageously overpaid and for no reason are ridiculously famous.
In many instances, young people now respond to the question of what career they would most like to pursue with the mind-numbing aspiration of “reality star.”
Of course, reality shows are anything but real. If audiences actually got to witness the makeup, lighting, staged setting, coaching, editing, etc., they would quickly realize to what terrible lengths they were being duped.
Interestingly, the last presidential election had many of the same elements that we see in reality show programming.
As a matter of fact, President Obama was swept into office thanks, in large part, to reality style wardrobe, makeup, lighting, scripting of lines, staging of events and mainstream media editing.
For over a year and a half, to the dismay of many who are still waiting for him to govern, the president has acted as if he is starring in his own reality show.
Perhaps he harbors a secret desire to one day be a cast member of “Jersey Shore,” the reality show of which he previously joked but later claimed he had no Snooki knowledge of.
Celebrities are increasingly wielding their fame to influence politics.
Wyclef Jean, an internationally known hip-hop
artist and sometime partner of Shakira, is now also the front-runner in
Haiti’s upcoming presidential election.
Born in Haiti and raised in Brooklyn, the former
Fugees frontman has risen to become one of the most famous names in his
native country and has put forth a detailed plan to rebuild the Haitian
economy.
Surprisingly, Jean is getting a bit of criticism
from, of all places, Hollywood. It arrived courtesy of Sean Penn – the
same Penn who typically has words of praise for Venezuelan despot Hugo
Chavez.
Penn accused Jean of not spending enough time in
Haiti after the earthquake and of misappropriating hundreds of thousands
of dollars from Jean’s charity, Yele Haiti.
Speaking on CNN’s “Larry King Live,” Penn said he
suspects that Jean may be backed by corporate interests and
opportunists who want to take advantage of his celebrity. The actor
acknowledged he does not know Jean.
“What the Haitian people need now is a leader who
is genuinely willing to sacrifice,” Penn said. “And one of the reasons I
don’t know very much about Wyclef Jean is I haven’t seen or heard
anything of him in these last six months that I’ve been in Haiti.”
Penn recommended that Jean’s donors receive very
close scrutiny, because “this is somebody who is going to receive an
enormous amount of his support, if he continues his campaign, from the
United States.”
Penn also noted that the country has a history of
American interests “coming in and underpaying people – this is a
culture of one to two dollars a day that they were making.”
Appearing on CBS’ “The Early Show,” Jean defended
himself, saying, “I just want Sean Penn to fully understand I am a
Haitian, born in Haiti and I’ve been coming to my country ever since [I
was] a child.”
The singer added, “He might just want to pick up the phone and meet, so he fully understands the man.”
“I have to take what I used to sing about – poverty, hunger, AIDS – and turn it into policy,” Jean said.
Penn didn’t say anything about an item that
appeared on the Smoking Gun website. According to documents posted on
the site, Jean owes more than $2.1 million in back taxes for 2006, 2007,
and 2008. Sounds like a perfect nominee for an Obama Cabinet post.
Hip-hop stars are apparently paid extremely well.
To his credit, Jean promises to pay back the money he owes and put an accounting of his finances online.
Now that’s way over the line.
‘The Expendables’ is Tongue and Cheeky Fun
By · CommentsThese day the news can be really depressing. The economy is getting
kicked around and our quality of life seems like it’s going in the tank.
Times for a good escapist movie.
Just our luck! A throwback flick arrives this week, and it captures the
excitement of the 1980s action movies. It’s called “The Expendables,” a
film co-written and directed by Rocky himself, Sylvester Stallone.
Stallone has been able to gather together a group of action movie
veterans to join him in the tribute to the genre. The cast includes
Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke and
Jet Li, as well as some additional action-flick leads like Jason
Statham, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, and Steve Austin.
Stallone recently had some choice comments about his fellow actors. “I
thought we had the ugliest group of guys on the planet in one movie…” READ MORE
